Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by combining warm milk, 1 teaspoon sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let it sit until frothy.
  2. Make the dough by mixing flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, butter, egg, zest, and lemon juice, and mix until dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  6. Roll out the dough into a rectangle about 12×8 inches.
  7. Spread softened cream cheese, drizzle lemon juice, and sprinkle sugar on the rolled-out dough.
  8. Roll the dough tightly from the long end into a log and slice into 1-1.5 inch pieces.
  9. Place the rolls in a greased baking dish and let them rise for about 30 minutes until puffed.
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Prepare the glaze by beating cream cheese and mixing in powdered sugar and lemon juice.
  12. Glaze the warm rolls and enjoy!

Notes
