Italian Cream Puffs with Custard Filling

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine water and unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add the all-purpose flour and salt when the mixture boils.
  3. Transfer the dough to a bowl and let it cool for about 10 minutes.
  4. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and pipe mounds of dough onto a baking sheet.
  5. Bake for about 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Prepare custard by cooking milk, sugar, and cornstarch over medium heat.
  7. Stir in vanilla extract once custard thickens.
  8. Slice cooled puffs in half and fill with custard.
